Georg´s theoretical research interests are social innovation, philanthropy and impact. Empirically, he studies civil society organisations, civic engagement, philanthropy, social innovation and impact measurement. His methodological interests lie in the recording and measurement of social innovation, impact measurement, transdisciplinarity and the transfer of knowledge.
His main areas of work are general management of CSI and various projects (especially collaborative projects), the acquisition of third-party funds, IT support and the representation of the CSI within and outside the university.
Georg Mildenberger headed the research department of the Heidelberg Centre for Social Investment (CSI) since 2009. Since 1st January 2022, he has been Acting Director of the CSI, and in Juli 2025 he was appointed Executive Director of CSI.
He was awarded a doctorate (Dr. phil.) in 2003 at the Technical University of Darmstadt and worked as a researcher and project manager at the International Centre for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities of the Eberhard Karl University of Tübingen from 2002 to 2007. From spring 2007, he worked as senior researcher at the CSI, prepared the postgraduate programme Nonprofit Management and Governance and supervised its accreditation. Since autumn 2008, he additionally worked as a project manager, and later was responsible for all of CSI´s research.
